Web Developer Exasperation Monday morning, 11 September 2006
Normally it’s ‘user error’. Today, for me, it was ‘developer error’.
I was working on a totally straight forward page. Not even got CSS in to it yet. But some of the images and HTML weren’t displaying. I had valid HTML, simple layout, the images were loaded by the browser, the images displayed separately in the browser.
I fired up BrowserCam and checked in the page in the same browsers and the images displayed. What was up with my setup!?
And then it dawned on me. I had been using a style sheet replacement for FireFoxs userContent.css which filters out ads and what not. I was using it on Safari too. I was filtering out my own HTML (the images were of sponsors logos). So, apart from solving that mystery I learned that it’s a good idea to test your pages with ad-blocking on and considering changing CSS class names and file names if your site isn’t loading properly.
