WidSets Tuesday morning, 3 October 2006

I had it all planned out, the problem - how to get all the data that I’m interested in (mostly RSS related) onto my phone. I was going to create some kind of mix between a web page where you customize a portal, for lack of a better word, that aggregates your data and formats it specifically for your phone (through the phone's web browser). I was going to get cracking as soon as my exams were over next month.

Today I discovered (Nokia developed) WidSets and I am blown away. WidSets is a system for developing widgets for your mobile phone. Nokia developed a java client that runs on your phone, you select the widgets you’re interested in on your web browser (or through the client on your mobile phone), hit ‘synchronize’ and in real time the phone client updates the widgets.

The video below shows the site and then a live demonstration of adding a widget to your phone.

The demo on widsets.com suggests that on a bigger screen the experience is even better, this is a fantastic way of browsing. I think this has real potential, the system is easy to use, customizable to your needs, you can even get it to alert you after you've used a certain amount of bandwidth. Top stuff from Nokia!

I picked this up from ever informative and in depth O’Reilly Radar.

PostScript- This is my first attempt at sticking a video on the web. I don’t have any proper software for editing videos and I took it with my digital camera. The picture quality is okay but I apologise in advance for the blitter when I start using my phone on the internet. I’m not sure how one gets around that.

Nice. I had quite a lot of fun looking for your reflection in the mobile phone screen. For a minute, I thought it looked as though you had taken a hint from a miner by taping your camera to your head.

That's quite cool, though, this widsets.com stuff. Very geeky, just as I expect from you.
